Senior quarterback Jonah Guevara leads Liberty High football to the championship game.

The Liberty Lions earned a sport at the 2019 AIA State 6A Football Championship.

A state championship title won’t be easy, as the 9-4 Lions face powerhouse Red Mountain Mountain Lions, who take a 12-1 record into the big game, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.

The championship game is scheduled for Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium.

Red Mountain’s explosive offense is averaging nearly 50 points per game; with 620 points, the Mountain Lions have scored more than twice the 295 Red Mountain allowed.

Liberty scored 469 points, allowing 311 over the season. 

Peoria’s Lions are led by senior quarterback Jonah Guevara, averaging just under 200 total yards per game. 

Liberty freshman running back Zaccheus Cooper has rushed for 95 yards per game.

Liberty’s tough defense is anchored by Jax Stam, a tackling machine defensive back.

Liberty is coached by Mark Smith, a former defensive coordinator in his first year as the head coach.
