As you place your food bags by your mailbox this Saturday morning, keep in mind there are thieves out there waiting for this yearly donation to their pantry. Yes, there are actually thieves waiting patiently as the mail carriers make their rounds for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.
Mail carriers are aware they may not be picking up all of the food donated by generous mail patrons, who want to help feed the hungry in our communities. One has to wonder how hungry a person has to be to steal from those who are in the same dire situation they are.
If you happen to see someone stealing from the mailbox drop sites, you are encouraged to do nothing but take down the license plate number. Turn it over to the police department, but do not expect action. Sometimes, the thieves are truly hungry and not just out to save money on their grocery bills. Your best course of action is to quietly thank your lucky stars you have food in your own pantry and enough to give to someone else.
