Walgreens and its primary care partner Village Medical recently opened three Village Medical at Walgreens practices in the area, with plans to open 12 by summer 2021.

Village Medical at Walgreens, which includes a location at 20266 N. Lake Pleasant Road, is a full-service primary care practice. Six in 10 Americans live with at least one chronic condition, requiring multiple daily medications. In Arizona, chronic diseases are the most common, costly and preventable of all health problems.

“At Village Medical at Walgreens, Phoenix-area patients benefit from our direct communication and ongoing collaboration with the Walgreens pharmacists as part of our integrated care model,” said Dr. Kamel Sadek of Village Medical. “This clinical model leads to increased medication adherence, higher quality of care, and improved patient experience.”

Jodi Burgess, PharmD, the Walgreens pharmacist and pharmacy manager at the North Lake Pleasant Road store, said it’s important, especially during a pandemic, to have coordinated care.

“We want to help our Phoenix-area patients get the services, support and medications they need when they need them, which ultimately leads to better health outcomes and lower health care costs,” she said.

The Peoria location has four providers who work together to elevate patient care, she said.

“I take the time to talk to them about how their experience went,” she said. “The stories I get to hear and the experiences they have are pretty amazing. They’re really so incredibly thankful to have that service and to have us really take care of the complete patient. Hearing stories like that have been the highlight of my career.”

The clinic’s hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Walk-ins and same-day appointments are available, too. For more information, visit villagemedical.com.

The expansion follows the joint announcement to open 600 to 700 Village Medical at Walgreens in more than 30 U.S. markets within the next four years, with the first 40 new practices opening by the end of summer 2021.

Expansion plans were driven by the success of the first five practices in Houston, indicated by high satisfaction from patients and physicians and better health outcomes. With many locations in medically underserved areas, Village Medical at Walgreens will help meet the needs of patients, including those who may not have access to health care and are at greater risk of health disparities.

“I feel like this is what they talked about in school — the triad relationship between provider, pharmacist and patient,” Burgess said. “We hear about this pharmacy utopia, if you will. Then, you get out and practice and it’s not there. There’s this health care disconnect. A lot of my colleagues are very jealous that they don’t have this.”
