Phoenix resident Frank Vaquera Jr., 28, faces attempted murder charges after a late-night Peoria shooting.

Frank Vaquera Jr. now faces second-degree murder and unlawful flight charges after the 24-year-old he allegedly shot outside a Peoria bar died.

“This is an ongoing investigation, and the men and women of the Peoria Police Department express our condolences to the family and friends of the victim,” said Brandon Sheffert, a Peoria Police spokesman.

At 2:20 a.m. June 14, 911 dispatchers received a call about a man pointing a gun at others at Coop’s Bar and Grill located near 85th and Peoria avenues.

The caller said the man fired the gun and drove away in a black SUV.

Officers arrived on scene and found a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died three days later.

Other officers saw a black SUV driving westbound on Peoria Avenue and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle. The driver refused to stop, according to police, and crashed behind a business near 91st and Peoria avenues. 

Police arrested Vaquera, 28. The Phoenix resident has previous convictions for aggravated DUI and unlawfully possessing a weapon.
