With COVID-19 cases on the rise in the county and no signs of the pandemic lessening, the city of Peoria is wary of large gatherings.

As such, the city-sponsored Veterans Day celebrations of years past will not be happening this year.

“We are not hosting any veterans events for the public,” said Kristina Perez, a city spokeswoman.

“Because of the concern surrounding COVID-19, and in the interest of public safety, we are not hosting an event that would encourage gatherings of more than 50 people.”

She noted the city “will honor veterans and their families that have been added to the Peoria Veterans Honor Wall with special certificates and packets for them to pick up when they come to the Veterans Memorial at Rio Vista Community Park on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11.”

The city of Peoria is also producing a video featuring local veterans, which will be posted on social media.
