Retired Peoria Fire-Medical Department Capt. David Rehnke died Jan. 11 after a 10-year battle with renal cell carcinoma. He was 59.
“Dave’s death is considered a line-of-duty death caused by occupational cancer,” said Mario Bravo, a department spokesman.
Rehnke was hired in 1989, promoted first to engineer in 1996, then to captain in 2008 before retiring in 2015.
“Dave retired as a captain but made his mark as an engineer. As an engineer, Dave set the bar by which other engineers were, and are, measured,” Bravo said. “He was meticulous about every detail of his apparatus, all the equipment on it and the safety of the personnel in it.”
He noted that, during his 10-year battle with cancer, “Dave fought for every firefighter in Arizona to work smarter and safer and to be covered by Arizona’s presumptive cancer statute.
“Losing Dave, we lost a great person and a beloved family man.”
Rehnke is survived by his wife of 30 years, Brenda, his daughter Shannon and his son Dustin.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Firefighters Cancer Awareness Support Network at firefightercancersupport.org/how-you-can-help/donate.
