Join Peoria’s MLK

Day of Service 

In celebration of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the city of Peoria will host Peoria’s first MLK Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Peoria Community Center, located at 8335 W. Jefferson Street. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the city has invited a variety of health and wellness organizations and local community assistance groups to showcase their services for residents. 

The Franchise Band will be the featured entertainment, along with other multicultural entertainment and activities. Chaz Jackson, the president of the Arizona chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers of America, will kick off the event at 10 a.m. 

There will be volunteer opportunities, food trucks, a storytime by First Things First, free books for children, service providers and community resources. The on-site clinic will also provide vaccines for COVID-19, flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines for adults and children. In observance of the holiday, city offices, facilities, the Peoria Community Center and both public libraries will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17. 

Rio Vista Recreation Center will be open during regular hours from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. All city parks, including the new Paloma Community Park, will be open for the holiday. Also, trash pickup will change for the holiday. Monday, Jan. 17, pickup will move to Tuesday, Jan. 18. Tuesday, Jan. 18, pickup will move to Wednesday, Jan. 19. Peoria hosts vaccine clinics

The city of Peoria is partnering with Safeway to provide flu, shingles, pneumonia and COVID-19 vaccines throughout January at the Peoria Community Center, located at 8335 W. Jefferson Street. Free COVID-19 booster shots are now available for all vaccine types as well. Clinics will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, Wednesday, Jan. 19 and Friday, Jan. 28.

West Valley Art Museum features fiber artists

The West Valley Art Museum is hosting the 4 Common Corners Fiber Artists Group at the art gallery in Peoria City Hall until Thursday, Jan. 13. 

Notable fiber artists from the four corners area have come together to interpret themes under the exhibit title of “Extremes in the Southwest.”

Visitors can see the complexities of fiber art quilts and the various methods used in this art form for free. The WVAM Art Gallery is on the first floor of Peoria City Hall, at 8401 W. Monroe Street. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays.
