Benevilla staff gets into the 40th anniversary spirit.

Benevilla recently celebrated its 40th year of promoting health and independence by providing supportive services.

The not-for-profit senior and family services agency was founded in 1981 by Sun Cities citizens out of concern that local services were not readily available to the community’s residents.

Forty years ago this May, Benevilla formed as Sun Cities Area Interfaith Services Inc. and was established as a nonprofit, nonsectarian agency with 30 volunteers who helped with errands and home care services.

With a handful of employees, IFS grew into Benevilla, a network of Life Enrichment Day Programs, comprehensive care-management programs, free support and educational services across the Northwest Valley. It is all supported by more than 500 volunteers and 100-plus employees seeking to help keep senior citizens and families independent in their own homes.

Benevilla provides many support services, including:

•Three Life Enrichment Day Programs providing care for older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia, survivors of stroke, Parkinson’s disease and fall-related injuries located in Surprise, Sun City and Peoria.

•Two Life Enrichment Day Programs for adults with disabilities at locations in Sun City and Peoria.

•A safe, family-friendly learning environment at Wirtzie’s Preschool and Child Care in Surprise, including the unique Intergenerational Program.

•Free home services for seniors and home-bound adults supported by generous volunteers who run errands, provide grocery shopping, assist transportation services to medical appointments, basic handyman services, business assistance, and visitor and phone check-ins.
