Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat and the Peoria City Council members celebrated the New Year with a raise.
Peoria’s elected officials gave themselves a 5% raise in 2021.
By unanimous vote, council approved the raises Nov. 10—part of the “consent agenda” portion of the meeting, during which “routine items” are lumped together. As such, there was no discussion about the raises.
The mayor’s salary increased from $34,550 to $36,278.
City council salaries were bumped from $23,033 to $24,185.
Peoria’s Citizens Commission on Salaries for Elected City Officials, which provides recommendations every two years, advised the council to approve the salary increases.
Commission members George Johnson, David Eberhart, Christina Huff, Reed Webber and Monika Masciangelo met Feb. 4, 2020, and after a presentation by Christine Nickel of the Human Resources Department agreed to make the recommendation of raises to city council.
City council, in accordance with the city charter, must either accept or reject the commission’s recommendations.
Council could have voted to exceed the 5% increase—but that would require a resolution to be prepared to refer the matter to the voters.
In 2018, council voted for a 5% raise that took effect in 2019.
Peoria is in the middle of its neighbors in elected official salaries.
Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers is paid $48,000—nearly a third more than neighbor Carlat.
Members of Glendale City Council are paid $34,000—a whopping 40% more than Peoria’s council of Vicki Hunt, Bill Patena, Bridget Binsbacher, Michael Finn, Denette Dunn and Jon Edwards.
Glendale voters overwhelmingly rejected a 2019 request of hefty raises for the city’s politicians.
Peoria politicians are also paid far less than those in Phoenix, by far the state’s largest city with a population of 1.6 million, which pays its mayor $87,998 annually. Phoenix City Council members are paid $61,599 per year.
But, compared to Goodyear, the Peoria elected officials are living large.
Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord is paid $23,000 per year. The new salary for Goodyear City Council members is $12,000—half of Peoria’s.
Avondale, with a population of 84,000, pays its council members $8,905 per year.
