As Independence Day draws near, the Peoria Fire-Medical Department is reminding residents to be careful around fireworks.
Consumer fireworks can be purchased and used June 24 through July 6. However, fireworks cannot be used on city property, including parks, city streets and city sidewalks. They also cannot be used on state land or on school property unless a permit has been issued.
Fireworks such as spinners and fountains cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 16, but any age group can use novelty items such as poppers and sparklers.
Though they seem harmless, sparklers can cause severe burns—most have a tip temperature reaching 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rather than using fireworks at home, the city encourages residents to watch past fireworks shows at the All-American Festival at Home July 4. For more information, visit peoriaaz.gov/events.
