“Books are uniquely portable magic.” — Stephen King

Old Town’s community garden is sprouting more these days than veggies. Sprung up overnight is the community’s first Little Free Library. Cities large and small are sprouting these little sanctuaries of reading all over the USA, in neighborhoods like yours.

Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. Peoria boasts two beautiful libraries. However, many folks cannot travel to either of them.

It would be nice to take a walk in your own neighborhood and be able to stop to pick up a book, free of charge, and take it home.

The way Little Free Libraries work is that you take a book and leave a book. No one monitors the process, so you may take a book and bring one back the next time. It’s a true “circulating library” in neighborhoods — portable magic.

We all know that academically, children growing up in households without lots of books are on average three years behind children in homes with easily accessible books. Little Free Libraries, placed in the open in communities, allow children and adults to always have a book at their fingertips.

Where do these little libraries go? In parks, in front yards, in neighborhoods where they can be easily accessible to folks on bikes or walking — young and old.

Peoria is on the cusp of beginning a citywide Little Free Library movement. Stay tuned for more information on how you or your group can become a part of this important literacy endeavor. Look up littlefreelibrary.org for ideas and get your group excited about taking part in this reading adventure.
