State Trailer Peoria is making steady progress on the facade changes to the old Walmart at 83rd and Peoria avenues in downtown Peoria.
Acacia district Councilmember Vicki Hunt took a tour of the renovated store last week, and she said, “He’s on schedule; we had a nice visit. He’s hired a local guy for store manager.
“It’s huge and it’s going to be really nice.”
Hult said Wednesday, “We plan on opening in September and have a grand opening in October.
“We’re stocking shelves. It’s just a very big project.
“We’ll probably open Oct. 1 and have a grand opening Oct. 16 and 17.
“The city has been absolutely wonderful on everything. “
Hult came to terms with the city in February on a 10-year commercial revitalization easement agreement.
In exchange for reimbursement for half of actual costs for construction of the facade and parking lot improvements (up to $725,000), STP signed a 10-year operating covenant that required it to maintain the improvements, and acquire city approval on all tenant selections.
At the time, Peoria Economic Development Services Director Scott Whyte said what Hult and State Trailer Peoria plans for the center “creates a destinational draw for Old Town generally, and Peoria Town Center specifically.”
Hult said he is in contact with the city daily on the 174,000-square-foot completely refurbished project, and he is looking forward to opening his business in Peoria.
