APS constructing solar structures at Benevilla

Benevilla’s Surprise campus will soon have solar shaded parking structures, as plans were announced for Arizona Public Service (APS) to begin construction this spring.

As part of its Solar Communities program, which provides solar-covered parking structures at no cost and annual bill savings to nonresidential customers, APS will install and maintain two parking structures at Benevilla. APS will maintain the structures for the next 20 years.

APS’ selection of Benevilla marks one of the first nonprofit organizations to receive solar-covered parking and a monthly bill credit. In total, Benevilla will receive $143,400, or nearly $600 per month, over the next 20 years.

“In addition to all of the great benefits this program will provide for our organization and the individuals we serve, we are looking forward to being a part of APS’ growing clean energy portfolio, as well as enjoying the convenience of shaded parking for our staff and visitors,” said Joanne Thomson, Benevilla president and CEO.

The Solar Communities program is free to qualifying nonresidential customers who serve limited income populations, including Title 1 schools, nonprofits, rural governments and municipalities.
