A man drowned near Scorpion Bay Marina late last month after passersby were unable to get to him in time.
According to Peoria police, Odivio Ramirez Gomez was swimming with family and friends near the shoreline of Operations Cove near Scorpion Bay Marina at the Lake Pleasant Regional Park just after 4 p.m. May 27 when he became distressed and went under the water.
People from the shore attempted to swim to him, but police said they were not good swimmers and could not make it.
MCSO lake patrol deputies arrived by watercraft and land. Lake patrol detectives, who arrived by boat, set a marker buoy in reference to what family members were yelling and pointing toward the middle of the cove. As the buoy was set by one of the lake patrol detectives, he saw the victim in the water on the bottom. The lake detective jumped in 7.5 feet of water and recovered the victim.
Deputies on shore began CPR. Peoria Fire-Medical personnel arrived on scene and took over lifesaving measures.
The victim was pronounced deceased on scene despite continued lifesaving measures.
Lake patrol detectives assumed the investigation. Evidence gathered at this point does not suggest any alcohol, drugs or foul play. The decedent was later conveyed to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation. This investigation will remain open at this time.
