Innovative bridge moves traffic without crossing intersection
Residents living north of Union Hills Drive west of 83rd Avenue have something to shout about this week. The U-turn bridge at Loop 101 is open.
It has been a long time coming, a decade-long plan that was halted by fund deprivation.
As part of a comprehensive reconstruction of the Loop 101 interchange at Union Hills Drive in Peoria, the state's first-ever freeway U-turn bridge opened to traffic last weekend.
With the bridge, local traffic will be able to more easily access eastbound Loop 101 from nearby Peoria neighborhoods.
In addition to the U-turn bridge, previously referred to as the Texas u-turn, the Union Hills Drive interchange was widened and Loop 101 access to and from Beardsley Road was added, providing another option for local drivers.
The U-turn bridge will allow drivers to access eastbound Loop 101 from the recently completed extension of Beardsley Road and the newly constructed frontage road that opened last fall.
In addition to the U-turn bridge opening, a new southbound Loop 101 on-ramp south of Beardsley Road also will open, easing access to southbound Loop 101.
The $20.6-million project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the City of Peoria and through the voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan. The Arizona Department of Transportation managed construction of the improvements, in cooperation with the cities of Peoria and Glendale.

This is a big month for ADOT openings - a new segment of Loop 303 from Happy Valley Road to I-17 is also opening this week, along with a newly improved section of State Route 87 north of the Saguaro Lake turnoff (north of Fountain Hills).
