Glendale Elementary makes administrative moves

Glendale Elementary School District hired a new assistant superintendent for human resources and principals for three schools and four assistant principals.
Deby Valadez will join GESD as the new assistant superintendent for human resources. She’s a 28-year educator who most recently served as assistant director of human resources in the Cartwright Elementary School District. Valadez has a strong background in working in high need/high poverty areas and diverse urban schools. Prior to her current position, Valadez was a teacher, assistant principal and principal. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Arizona University. She replaces Barbara Goodwin, who is retiring.
Students and parents at Imes, Desert Spirit and Horizon will see new faces in the principal’s office. Santina Carrillo, who is presently assistant principal at Landmark, is the new principal at Isaac Imes; Mary Beth McKim, who is presently assistant principal at Sunset Vista, will be the new principal at Desert Spirit; and Sarah Balder will move from assistant principal to principal at Horizon.
Carrillo is a 19-year educator. She has served as a classroom teacher for nine years, an interventionist, an instructional coach and as a K-8 assistant principal. Carrillo earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Arizona State University, and her master’s degree in elementary education/reading and leadership from Northern Arizona University. She replaces Shelly Hartman, who is moving to a position at the district office.
McKim has been an educator for 28 years. She has served as a K-3 teacher for 10 years, an instructional specialist, an achievement adviser and as a K-8 assistant principal. McKim earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She earned her first master’s degree in instruction and curricular studies from the University of Nevada and earned her second master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University. She replaces Scott Winters, who is relocating from Arizona with his family.
Balder has been an educator for 19 years. She has served as a K-8 assistant principal for 11 years at Burton, Sunset Vista, Discovery and Horizon. Balder was a teacher in first and fifth grade and technology. She also served as a student council adviser. Balder earned her bachelor’s degree in advertising and a post degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University, and earned a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Arizona State University. She replaces Cheri Dawn Emmerson, who is moving to a position at the district office.
Appointed as assistant principals were:
• Lydia Horstman at Desert Spirit;
• Shannan Bernal at Horizon;
• Heather Morrison at Landmark; and
• Jennise Conley at Sunset Vista.
