Mayor Cathy Carlat awarded Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) as the Mayor’s Business of the Month for February 2018.

Anchoring the P83 Entertainment District, ABT is one of the Valley’s only year-round professional theater companies to offer professional performances by locally and national acclaimed artists, along with a refined dining experience.

Since opening in 2005, ABT has always been a family affair. For the Klaphake family, the founders of ABT, the goal and vision of the theater was to build a one-of-a-kind venue that would combine quality dining and professional theater at a great value. ABT has delivered on that vision to more than 900,000 patrons who have passed through its doors.

Particularly intriguing to ABT’s guests is the lobby wall-to-wall mural titled, “A Portrait,” created by co-founder Penny Klaphake. The 84-foot mural, depicting scenes and stars from 1930s Broadway in New York City, is the culmination of 10 years of research, sketching and painting. Each portion of the mural has its own unique meaning and fascinating story.

ABT is currently undergoing an expansion to the Encore Room, creating a 6,000-square-foot, high-tech, multi-media performance, banquet and conference space. The increased space will allow ABT to provide a more diverse and varied roster of shows, concerts, event and meeting space for businesses and organizations. Construction of the Encore Room is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Kiel Klaphake presides as the executive producer and assures that ABT leaves its mark on the community by supporting the education of young people in both a professional training capacity through its Academy and scholastically through outreach and education programming at its Theatre for Young Audiences.

Klaphake welcomes community organizations, such as the Peoria Chamber of Commerce, Peoria North Rotary, Peoria Unified School District, and others to the venue for events and meetings.

Carlat said, “ABT has become part of the fabric of Peoria, an amenity that brings the community together and connects residents through shared memories and the joy theater brings.”

Last month, ABT announced its 14th season with lineup of shows that includes “Titanic,” “An American in Paris” and “Mamma Mia!”
